Ingredients of Success: Small Habits on Repeat

 Have you ever wondered how the world’s greatest athletes got to where they are today? How the greatest entrepreneurs achieved such huge ambitions? How politicians win their most incredible victories? It’s easy to presume such things are down to luck, circumstance or pure talent. We tend to think these people had a few glorious moments in their life which were the cause of their success. But we’re here to tell you otherwise, that it was down to the smallest habits played on repeat… day in, day out.


Athletes train religiously, no matter how monotonous they may find it. Entrepreneurs establish work patterns and behaviours that are instilled deep within their daily routines. Politicians fight for the same cause again, and again, and again until they are finally heard. So what would we have to do to achieve similar victories?

  • Establish an effective pattern
  • Calculate how many times this needs to be repeated for the desired result
  • Do Not. Break. The. Formula.

When you see these 3 simple steps, you can apply it to everything. Take losing weight as an example:

  • Establish and effective pattern:
    Healthy Eating + Exercise
  • Calculate how many times this needs to be repeated for the desired results
    Healthy Eating + Exercise x 120 days = 1 stone weight loss
  • Do. Not. Break. The. Formula.
    If the pattern is broken, and if it’s broken multiple times, it affects the calculation and the result will not be achieved.

Why don´t I do this?

Sounds simple, right? And you already knew that, didn’t you? Then why is it so difficult to follow the formula? Surely we could all be the skinny, productive, talented, overachieving versions of ourselves 100% of the time? We're probably not these supersonic versions of ourselves because:

  • Will power takes energy and focus, both of which are limited resources
  • Exerting will power consistently means building associated pathways in your brain and strengthening the muscle that exerts such power



Where do I even start?

There is the Seinfeld method. Seinfeld uses the tactic of hanging a large year-at-a-glance calendar on his wall and, for every day he writes new material, has the exquisite pleasure of drawing a big red "X" over that day. Drawing those Xs get to be pretty fun and rewarding, so he kept doing it. Eventually, he began to create a chain of red Xs. The rule was to never break that chain. Not only does this approach programme the body and mind to sit down and write daily, it also motivates you to continue that beautiful string of big, red Xs. If you don't write one day, you don't get to draw the X. It doesn't particularly matter what you write. Blogs, articles, scripts, your memoir. It can be anything, as long as you're actively and routinely pushing yourself. You can, depending on your goal, take it a step further and only reward yourself with the X if you hit specific targets.


Little by Little...

So, as you can see, success doesn't necessarily derive from luck, talent or magnificent moments. It´s about repeating small habits over time to gain those big results, so get working on your willpower and delayed gratification. Surround yourself with those who embrace a similar mentality. Every day we are fascinated by the incredible achievements of Our Space entrepreneurs. Perhaps it helps being in an environment where you can practice those small habbitts; looking after your health and well being by riding your bike to work every day, meditating weekly, preparing your own healthy lunches, dedicating one hour each day to phone booth time for new client calls. Whatever the habit, we support it and curate a community with a similar mentality for the importance of small habits.
